Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Maurertown, VA. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair testing, with facilities across cities nationwide equipped to conduct such tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head's crown or body hair is generally required. Various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, can be detected.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for substance screening. Many organizations, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now favor this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and probationers frequently use hair follicle tests, valued for their extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection procedure, and resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting recent substance use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. The hair captures biomarkers within its strands, offering a prolonged historical record of substance use. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use up to approximately a three-month period. It is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A sample of 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent mass of body hair is suitable. References to head hair exclusively mean scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal phases involved in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a rapid preliminary check for addictive substances. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that give presumptively positive results in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample provides a presumptively positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation when required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Immunity to deception: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
