In Edgewood, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty is in hair testing, available at centers across cities Nationwide. Typically, you should have between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more common in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over urine tests. This method is preferred by employers with strict drug policies, legal systems, and individuals under probation due to its long detection window. Hair tests trace drug usage up to 90 days, collected under observation, making them nearly cheat-proof. However, for usage in the last 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within its developing fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use up to a period of about three months for both alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

To obtain an ideal sample for screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp is required to yield 100mg of hair. For EtG, extra tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. In references to head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into a laboratory's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug consumption in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides historical insight: It delivers a trajectory of drug use over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though frequently dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
