In Cushing, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations. Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers spread throughout every city nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is generally needed. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol, or even custom options.

Lately, the hair follicle drug test has become a common method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors often prefer it to urine tests. This method is favored among those enforcing strict drug-free policies. Its main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, with monitored collection making it hard to tamper with. Yet, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine tests are still superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within its strands as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample with around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional checks, or panels exceeding 10, a sample size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be taken. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes other hair varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory stage for integrating a sample into the lab system. It ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any manual data entry that an electronic chain of custody may not cover.

Screening conducts a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method for excluding drug usage in many samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that presumptively test positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a specimen shows presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drug compounds are extracted from hair at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Positive Screening outcomes undergo confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Enhanced accuracy: It is challenging to falsify results of a hair drug test.
  • Chronological usage data: Shows a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other forms of drug tests.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Cushing, WI, hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine testing. A key benefit is superior detection accuracy. While urine tests often detect recent drug use, hair tests can reveal substance use over a longer period.

The reliability of hair testing is unmatched. With a detection window of up to 90 days, employers get a comprehensive overview of an individual's history, aiding in more informed decision-making processes.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Cushing, WI provides an extended detection window of up to 90 days. This allows employers to have a broader understanding of substance use history, as opposed to the limited timeframe of urine tests.

The long detection period offered by hair testing translates to better hiring decisions and ongoing employee assessments. This extensive coverage provides great value, ensuring that substance histories are accurately reflected.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
