Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cannondale, Connecticut. If hair or alcohol testing is required, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in such tests and operates centers across all cities in the nation capable of performing hair analyses. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair is required. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized requests.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle testing in drug screening practices has increased. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests instead of standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are mandatory for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the legal system, and those under probation. The main advantage is the extended drug detection window of up to 90 days and its supervised collection process, making it almost foolproof. However, for detecting drugs used within the past 5 days, urine testing is still the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers, hair strands offer an extended overview of alcohol and drug use. When clipped near the scalp, hair can present about a 3-month detection timeframe for these substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about #2 pencil thick) from the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a collection of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages within the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the initial sample is processed into the lab’s system. This step confirms the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift assessment for drug misuse. While an affordable means to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires verification to be legally valid. Any Screening samples with presumptive positives require further confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results are confirmed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any preliminary positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined following both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug assessments are tough to manipulate, leading to more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals patterns of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs are detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair shade and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often named "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
