Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in Salmon Brook, Connecticut. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched with centers spanning cities nationwide for easy access to hair tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically required. These examinations can uncover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored hair testing choices.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly used in drug testing procedures. More employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists are opting for hair drug testing over typical urine assessments. Zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and probation cases predominantly utilize this test type. Its key advantage is a lengthy detection window reaching up to 90 days, observed collection process, and strong resistance to tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain superior for identifying recent drug use, specifically within a 5-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol intake. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can supply nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advocate measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar volume of body hair may be collected. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. The term body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

Laboratory processing of a drug test entails four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for common drugs. Though Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result needs verification to be valid in court. Any samples that display a presumptive positive in Screening do necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample registers a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a lesser concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed in accordance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as many as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly difficult, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
