Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wilton, Connecticut. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing spans all cities Nationwide. A hair sample from the crown or body, typically 1.5 to 2 inches long, is required for analysis. Hair assessments can unveil drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained traction in recent years as a preferred method for detecting substance use. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts favor this method due to its extensive detection period, which can last up to 90 days. With nearly foolproof collection methods, it offers an advantage over traditional urine tests, although urine tests still excel for detecting recent usage within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. It offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When extracted near the scalp, hair can deliver approximately a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is effortless to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in dimension to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10-panel screenings, a 150mg specimen is preferable. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test has four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s infrastructure. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift evaluation for substance misuse. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive result must be validated to be court-admissible. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair analysis the most challenging technique to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked as presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed regarding both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, resulting in heightened accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insight: It outlines a pattern of drug consumption over time, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Outcome discrepancies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is an advanced method preferred in Wilton, CT due to its superior detection accuracy. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests detect substance use over a more extended period, improving reliability and providing a more comprehensive view of a person's drug habits.

The advantages of hair testing over urine tests are clear: it offers longer detection windows and reduces the possibility of evasion, ensuring that employers receive accurate and trustworthy information, complying with stringent workplace policies.

Extended Detection Window

Extended detection is a standout feature of hair follicle testing in Wilton, CT. With a window extending up to 90 days, employers gain a complete overview of an individual's substance use history. This comprehensive outlook assists in evaluating long-term habits versus the limitations of shorter detection methods offered by other tests.

In hair testing, the increased window aids employers' decision-making, helping identify patterns of drug use that might be missed through alternative testing methods, thereby ensuring a safer, more informed work environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
