Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessment services in Barber, Idaho. Need a hair-related drug or alcohol check? Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair evaluations, and we have testing facilities across every city nationwide available to conduct hair assessments. Typically, you'll need hair at least 1.5 to 2 inches long from your crown or body for this purpose. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing solutions.

Over recent years, the strategy for executing drug tests more frequently involves hair follicle assessments. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and addiction treatment experts are opting for hair evaluations rather than conventional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. The standout advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection timeframe for substance use—up to 90 days, with samples collected in a monitored setting and are challenging to tamper with. Yet, for identifying recent drug consumption within the past five days, urine analysis remains the most reliable method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The presence of biomarkers trapped within the growing hair strand's fibers offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use. When taken near the scalp, hair may reveal up to a 3-month detection timeframe for both alcohol and drug substances. Hair collection is straightforward, inconvenient to alter, and simple to transport.

For optimal screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (the size of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp is recommended to obtain 100mg of hair. In cases of EtG, additional testing, and/or beyond 10-panel tests, a total of 150mg of hair is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is unaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test results involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial entry of a sample into a lab system, confirming that it was securely sealed and transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening aims at a preliminary quick examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates authentic confirmation to be court admissible. Any samples presumptive of positivity during Screening require subsequent validation.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positivity, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), thus hair drug testing remains one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Any positive findings from Screening are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation if required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is governed by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Tough to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is nearly impossible, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Historical insight: It reveals patterns of drug usage over time, instead of mere recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to trace recent usage: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become detectible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur greater costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests" being widely used, the examination itself evaluates the hair strand—not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Barber, ID, hair follicle testing takes the lead over traditional urine tests. These tests offer extensive detection capabilities compared to their urine counterparts, providing unmatched accuracy and reliability.

While urine tests detect substance use within days, hair tests capture a broader window, revealing long-term patterns. This makes them the go-to choice for employers and professionals who emphasize rigorous standards.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Barber, ID boasts an extended detection period, revealing substance use up to 90 days prior. This wide-ranging window offers employers invaluable insight into patterns of drug consumption.

Contrasted with short-term detection methods, hair testing paints a comprehensive picture of an individual's drug history, aiding employers in making informed decisions regarding potential hires or current employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Barber, ID, hair follicle testing significantly minimizes the risk of sample tampering, offering assured results that stand unchallenged. These tests are inherently designed to resist adulteration, unlike other testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
