Located in Clifford, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, our centers are nationwide, ready to administer hair drug tests. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke options.

Lately, drug testing has increasingly embraced hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests over urine tests. Zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs use hair tests due to their 90-day detection windows; collection is monitored, making them difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has increasingly been recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair can document a prolonged history of such substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands. When strands are taken near the scalp, they can offer a detection period of up to about 3 months for drug and alcohol traces. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily altered, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch length comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) cut nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation purposes. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties such as facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The key stages in lab processing for a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample within a lab’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening acts as a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admittance. Any samples appearing positive in Screening demand further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the sample for Extraction. During this phase, drug compounds are extracted from the hair at concentrations much lower than in alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive result follows through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that tested positive are cleaned before confirmation, if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is verified under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criterion and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Tracks historical patterns: It can outline a timeline of drug use instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It takes around 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Potential result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variability may impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The superiority of hair follicle testing over urine tests is evident in Clifford, MI. While urine tests offer limited detection periods, hair testing provides a comprehensive overview of substance use over several months, making it ideal for stringent monitoring.

Hair follicle tests boast enhanced detection accuracy, revealing drug use even after substances have cleared the system, unlike urine tests which may offer a narrower window, thereby offering a reliable examination.

Extended Detection Window

In Clifford, MI, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, capturing drug use history for up to 90 days. This long-term view is crucial for employers seeking a thorough understanding of an individual’s substance use patterns.

Employers benefit from the capability to detect long-term drug use, providing a far-reaching overview that urine tests cannot match, ensuring informed decisions about potential hires and current employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the key advantages of hair follicle testing in Clifford, MI is its tamper-resistant nature. This testing method significantly reduces the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring that results are reliable and difficult to undermine.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
