Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in Marlette, Michigan. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities nationwide that can conduct these assessments. For effective testing, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is generally required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing services.

In recent years, the use of hair follicle drug tests has surged. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine ones. Hair follicle tests are employed by organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, or probation programs. Their main advantage is a longer detection window, lasting up to 90 days, ensuring sample integrity and reducing chances of tampering. Urine tests remain more accurate for drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now widely recognized as an effective means for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. It offers an extended timeline of usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for a period of up to 3 months. This method is easy to gather, tough to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg, an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG assessments, extra panels, or tests above 10 panels, it's advisable to collect 150mg. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. Should scalp hair not be accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not provided by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid check for drugs of misuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Specimens with a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a challenging procedure.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Chronological data provided: This method can map drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
