Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug tests in Lapeer, Michigan. For those needing assessments for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with locations in all major cities across the country ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Our hair analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Lately, drug testing methods prominently feature hair follicle testing. A growing number of workplaces, judiciaries, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. Such tests are favored by organizations enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probationary monitoring. Their advantage lies in the extended detection window of up to 90 days, observable sample collection, and it being nearly tamper-proof. Yet, urine tests remain the standard for recent (within 5 days) drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair accumulates a history of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is taken close to the scalp, it offers a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is ideal for assessments and verification. For EtG, additions, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's best to weigh this on a jeweler’s scale. If there's no scalp hair available, the same amount of body hair can be used as an alternative. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing procedure in a lab encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory environment. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and filling in any missing information not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary analysis for prohibited substances. Although screening serves as a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug presence in most samples, a conclusive positive result requires further confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate an additional verification.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is taken from the submitted sample for Extraction. This stage involves retrieving drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than in samples like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing exceptionally challenging.

Verification for any positive initial tests is done using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples tentatively positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The whole sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP designation for hair and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter spans.
  • Resistance to tampering: It's challenging to manipulate a hair test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug activity over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically are costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lapeer, MI, the advantages of hair follicle testing outshine traditional urine tests. Hair tests boast superior detection accuracy and reliability, ensuring that past substance use is comprehensively identified. This enhanced detection capability makes hair testing an invaluable tool under most review scenarios.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
