In Lexington, Michigan, hair follicle drug tests are comprehensively provided by Accredited Drug Testing. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our expert services facilitate hair analysis nationwide, including access to test centers in every city. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is necessary. Hair tests effectively detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored testing solutions.

The rise of hair follicle drug tests for drug screenings has become prominent recently. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Their primary advantage? A significantly longer detection window for drug use, extending up to 90 days, involving an unobtrusive collection process, and being nearly foolproof. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting recent usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant resource in uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of a growing hair strand embed biomarkers, providing extended insight into drug and alcohol use. Collected near the scalp, the sample can reflect usage history of approximately 3 months for both alcohol and other drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (portrayed by the dimension of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the specimen. It is recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an identical quantity of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all alternate types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four essential phases in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning primarily deals with the initial stage of logging a sample into the laboratory’s database. This confirms proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocates an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry lacking an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid evaluation for drug presence. Though Screening cost-effectively excludes drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result necessitates further confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive result in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample return a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. In this step, drugs are drawn from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples showing presumptive positivity are washed pre-confirmation when required. The complete laboratory procedure, covering Accessioning through Confirmation, is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation as per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage extending to 90 days, unlike urine tests that feature a shorter measurement period.
  • Cheating is notably difficult: It’s highly challenging to circumvent a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result fidelity.
  • Supplies historical insight: It outlines a drug usage pattern over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect immediate usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs more cost compared to alternative methodologies.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair pigmentation and personal disparities in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
