Accredited Drug Testing ensures comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Marysville, Michigan. Whether it's for drugs, alcohol, or specialized options, we excel at hair testing with facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are required. These tests are proficient in detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored analyses.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become the norm in contemporary drug testing, surpassing standard urine tests favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals. Such tests are ideal for zero-tolerance policies due to the extended detection period of up to 90 days, delivering undeniable results through an observed collection method, though urine tests maintain accuracy for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair traps biomarkers in its fibers, providing a comprehensive history of substance intake by retaining these markers as the hair grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers up to a 90-day window to detect substances. It's straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece containing roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides the necessary 100mg for analysis. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is preferable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair is specific to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially registered in the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipping integrity, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary check for substance abuse. Although cost-efficient for ruling out drugs in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid for legal purposes. All samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further verification.

For samples that test presumptive positive at Screening, additional hair is extracted and prepared for the Extraction stage. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at concentrations significantly less than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive from Screening utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes thorough review according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Unlike urine tests, hair tests detect substance use for up to 90 days.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair tests are highly resistant to tampering, making results reliable.
  • Shows historical usage: Provides an overview of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and growth can impact the detection of drug metabolites.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand rather than the follicle situated under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Marysville, MI, hair follicle analysis offers advantages that outshine traditional urine tests. Hair tests are superior for detecting drug use over extended periods, often revealing patterns that urine tests might miss. This thorough detection not only offers accuracy but assures employers of the integrity of their testing results.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window of up to 90 days in Marysville, MI, offering a thorough insight into an individual's substance use history. This extensive timeframe allows employers to gauge the long-term behaviors of potential employees, creating a clearer picture of their lifestyle choices far beyond what standard tests reveal.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One key benefit of hair follicle tests in Marysville, MI, is their resistance to tampering. Unlike other test methods that can be subject to manipulation, hair samples are straightforward to collect and difficult to alter. This inherent tamper-resistance ensures the integrity of the results, making them reliable for critical decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
