In Port Huron, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, we provide services through our nationwide centers. Generally, for testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, either from the head or body. The tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific substances.

Hair follicle testing has become more prevalent for drug screening in recent years. Preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals, it offers a longer detection window than standard urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces and probation evaluations, these tests detect drug use for up to 90 days and are hard to falsify. However, urine tests remain more accurate for recent substance use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an influential means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substance usage by locking in biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, it offers an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

An optimal amount of 1.5 inches, encompassing 200 strands of hair (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, suitable for both screening and confirmation tests. In cases involving EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. A jeweler’s scale is recommended for measuring the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a proportional quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair assume scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory assessment of drug test results comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses initial sample processing within a lab’s system, including verification of proper sealing and shipment, LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) assignment, and completing any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial evaluation for substances of abuse. Although this step is cost-efficient for preliminary exclusion of drug use in most samples, any samples that screen positive require confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples necessitate a secondary validation.

Upon a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drug extraction from hair occurs at significantly lower concentrations than in alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used to confirm any positive screens. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory operation from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a less prolonged detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Showcases a prolonged drug use pattern over time rather than recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Parameters such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite presence in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in several ways, especially in Port Huron, MI. One significant advantage is the lengthened detection period, capturing substance use for up to 90 days compared to urine's limited timeframe. This extensive window provides a more comprehensive overview of an individual's drug history, making it invaluable for employers and monitoring purposes.

The accuracy of hair testing outshines traditional urine tests, reducing false positives and negatives. Its ability to capture a complete profile of recent substance use patterns gives employers deeper insights, enabling better-informed decisions. Hair tests minimize cheating risks, enhancing their reliability compared to urine tests, which are more prone to tampering and anomalies.

Extended Detection Window

In Port Huron, MI, hair follicle testing is valued for its extended detection window that can track drug use for up to 90 days. This prolonged period allows employers and authorities to understand substance use patterns comprehensively, offering an in-depth review of an individual's history. This is particularly beneficial in situations needing a thorough behavioral overview.

Unlike other methods, hair tests detect drugs over an extended timespan, providing detailed insights into past usage. Such information is essential for employers or probation officers seeking to assess candidates or those under supervision comprehensively. With this longer detection period, stakeholders can confidently evaluate compliance with substance policies over time.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Port Huron, MI, significantly reduces tampering risks, offering a more reliable and unassailable form of screening. The collection and analysis process for hair samples makes it exceedingly difficult to alter test outcomes, ensuring integrity and trust in the results crucial for employer decision-making.

The nature of hair sampling makes it nearly impossible to cheat, contrasting more susceptible methods like urine tests. This secured process reassures employers and legal authorities that the test results are genuine and reflective of real behavior. With hair testing, sample adulteration is markedly less plausible, providing peace of mind regarding result accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
