Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Saint Clair, Michigan. Specializing in hair tests, Accredited Drug Testing has centers nationwide to perform these assessments. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is required for the test. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in substance screening practices. Many organizations and legal entities prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers. The primary advantage is its extended detection span of up to 90 days, ensuring an observed collection process that is difficult to alter. However, urine tests remain the go-to for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair strands capture biomarkers in the fibers, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake. When hair samples are taken close to the scalp, they can provide a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, which includes about 200 hair strands (approximately as thick as a #2 pencil) from the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG analysis, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It's advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for determining a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for drug presence. While it provides a cost-effective means to negate drug usage for most samples, any positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Presumptive positive samples from Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepared for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing one of the most intricate methodologies.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Yields historical insight: It provides data on drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Despite being colloquially termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
