Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Sparlingville, Michigan. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, and we maintain testing centers across all US cities capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, you need to possess 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head or body for the test. Hair tests are available for analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personal hair testing options.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle drug testing has grown more popular in drug testing procedures. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and specialists in Substance Abuse request a hair drug test over the usual urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers who enforce strict no-drug policies, court orders, and those on probation. The major upside of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection timeline for drug use, usually lasting up to 90 days, involves an observed collection process, and is practically immune to tampering. Nonetheless, when it comes to detecting drug use in the last five days, a urine test remains the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have increasingly become considered a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug intake by retaining biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month observation period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to adulterate, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, extensions, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable volume of body hair can be gathered. In terms of head hair, this indicates scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all remaining hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key four phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This covers checking that the specimen was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening covers an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug consumption on most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be acceptable in court. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening do necessitate a secondary validation.

If a specimen shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and set up for Extraction. During this step, substances are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than with alternative methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is the reason hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer observation period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely hard, thereby making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a trend of drug use over time, and not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
