At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Askov, Minnesota. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in this testing method is unmatched, with facilities available across all cities in the US that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a favored method of drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer it over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and for those on probation due to their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that is nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly viewed as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a timeline of drug and alcohol consumption, with biomarkers accumulating in the strands as hair grows. When cut near the scalp, hair samples offer a detection window of roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. This method of collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal volume for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It’s suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be sampled, a similar quantity of body hair may be taken. Our reference to head hair is specifically about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other categories (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow in drug testing includes four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is logged into the laboratory system. This involves checking that the sample is properly sealed and was shipped correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not available via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. While Screening is a cost-effective measure to eliminate drug usage in most cases, a positive result during Screening requires a Confirmation to be accepted legally. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need further verification.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the sample for Extraction. In this phase, the drug content is derived from the hair at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive results from Screening are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed prior to Confirmation if necessary. The whole process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests identify substance use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection timeframes.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly tough, rendering the findings more trustworthy.
  • Offers chronological insights: It reflects a history of drug intake over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often costlier than alternative methods for drug testing.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth might alter the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the examination concerns the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Askov, MN offers distinct advantages over urine testing. It provides a superior detection range and is more reliable in identifying substance use. While traditional urine tests detect recent use, hair testing can identify drug usage over an extended period, offering more robust data.

Employers benefit from hair testing because it is harder to manipulate than urine tests. The accuracy and integrity of the results help maintain a drug-free workplace and mitigate risks associated with substance use.

Extended Detection Window

One compelling advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This prolonged period enables employers to gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history beyond immediate or recent use.

In Askov, MN, this long-term view is valuable for organizations looking to maintain a safe and productive workplace. By assessing a more extended history, employers can make more informed hiring or retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
