Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Rutledge, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with testing centers across the nation prepared to conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized hair testing options.

In recent years, the hair follicle drug test has become a more prevalent method in drug testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers maintaining zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The primary advantage is the longer detection window of up to 90 days, involving an observed collection process that's difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, the urine test remains the most precise for detecting drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying substance use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer close to a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels above 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the collected sample using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair is missing, a similar amount of body hair can be taken. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages included in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial entry of a sample into a lab system. This step verifies that the sample has been correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any further data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves obtaining drugs from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening presents the greatest complexity in execution.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as presumptively positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and under the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, thereby enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It unveils a timeline of drug use over months, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
