In Farwell, Nebraska, Accredited Drug Testing is your comprehensive provider for hair follicle drug assessments. For those requiring tests for drugs or alcohol, our expertise is in hair analysis, with accessible centers nationwide, including in every city. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the head or body. Our hair testing options cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized assessments.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method increasingly over traditional drug screening techniques. This shift is observed among employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts who now favor hair tests over urine analyses. Companies with strict drug policies, courts, and probation monitoring services opt for this method due to its extended detection span of up to 90 days and resistance to manipulation, though urine tests remain optimal for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-lasting record of alcohol and drug intake by trapping biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising roughly 200 strands (approximately pencil-thick) close to the scalp yields 100mg, an optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG tests, additional panels, and tests over 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Head hair refers only to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four crucial steps in the lab progression of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into a lab’s system. This includes checking that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial quick review for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in court. Any samples that test positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are pulled from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation when needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Shows historical patterns: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
