Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Potters Hill, North Carolina. For those requiring drug or alcohol screening via hair samples, they specialize in this area and have facilities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed, either from the head or body. Hair tests evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific tests.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has increased in drug testing practices. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle examinations are favored for their zero-tolerance policy efficacy, utilized by legal entities and probationers. Its foremost advantage lies in its extended detection span, usually up to 90 days, ensuring an observed collection and making cheating virtually impossible. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a persistent record of substances by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers up to an estimated three-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, manipulation is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for evaluation and validation. For EtG extensions, and/or panels exceeding 10 types, 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Note that when we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test outcome is processed through four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the sample's initial integration into a lab's workflow. It entails confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the specimen, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry omitted by an automatic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drug misuse. Although Screening provides an economical approach to eliminate drug use on most samples, a verified positive screen is requisite for it to be legally valid. Any samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening undergo additional confirmation.

Should a sample test positive at the Screening stage, further hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is among the most complex methods to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as presumptive positive are cleansed pre-confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair test is highly challenging, rendering the results more dependable.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can display a drug use pattern spanning a timeframe, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
