Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Yale, Oklahoma. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area, with numerous testing centers available nationwide to conduct hair tests. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for the test. Hair samples can be tested for various substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors are opting for hair-based testing over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for organizations enforcing stringent drug policies, courts, and those on probation. These tests offer a much longer detection period of up to 90 days, are conducted under observation, and are difficult to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting very recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting the consumption of substances like drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a comprehensive history of substance usage, thanks to the encapsulation of biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer an approximate three-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair – the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, auxiliary testing, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the sample. It's recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result incorporates four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is integrated into a laboratory's system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial, expedient assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening must be corroborated for legal admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are extremely difficult to manipulate, ensuring more precise results.
  • Reveals usage history: They can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
