In Barrington, Rhode Island, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, we specialize in these assessments, with facilities throughout all cities Nationwide to conduct hair examinations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair test options.

Recently, hair follicle analysis has increasingly become a preferred method for drug screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over traditional urine ones. Those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary checks employ hair analysis for its prolonged detection window—up to 90 days—ensuring accurate and tamper-proof results. Yet, for recent usage within five days, urine tests remain highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It traps biomarkers within the growing hair fibers, providing a long-term record of substance use. If sampled near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for various substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in the laboratory procedure for processing drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the sample’s initial integration into the laboratory’s system. It includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry that wasn't addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial assessment for drug presence. While Screening is a cost-efficient preliminary evaluation for drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening result must be confirmed to be legally valid. Samples showing presumptive positives during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

In cases where a Screening test indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. In this part of the process, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any screening positives is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to Confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for a period of up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably challenging to tamper with hair drug tests, enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over an extended timeframe, unlike tests that reveal only recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot reveal recent usage: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the scalp-embedded hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
