In Central Falls, Rhode Island, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Should there be a demand for hair drug or alcohol analysis, they focus on hair examinations with facilities across all nationwide cities prepared for hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body may be used. Hair testing covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Over recent years, hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction health experts are opting for hair tests instead of urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers utilize it. A primary advantage is its extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and difficult to falsify. For recent drug use, under five days, urine testing maintains its accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of the growing hair strands capture biomarkers, offering an extended record of alcohol and drugs. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug use over an approximate three-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil’s size) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for initial testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair should be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The main steps in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step of integrating a sample into the lab's workflow. This includes checking the sample's sealing and shipping integrity, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any data entry not captured via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs. It's a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, yet a positive outcome must be validated for court acceptability. Any samples indicating presumptive positives during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Presumptive positives in the Screening phase lead to more hair being drawn from the initial batch to prep for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other tests (i.e., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening among the most challenging methodologies.

Confirming positive screenings is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and holds ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, yielding more reliable results.
  • Historic usage data: Offers a timeline of drug use over several months, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
