Offering thorough hair follicle drug tests in Kearns, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for reliable hair drug or alcohol tests. Our centers are located in cities across the Nation, each equipped to handle hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Options include testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made hair testing services.

Lately, there has been an increase in the adoption of hair follicle drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests due to their extensive detection range of up to 90 days and the difficulty to manipulate the results. Despite this, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair serves as a long-term recorder of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. It is recommended to measure the quantity on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, equivalent body hair can be sourced. When discussing head hair, reference is made to scalp hair alone. Body hair pertains to all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This comprises verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in the bulk of samples, a positive outcome demands confirmation to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenges of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a more restricted detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It furnishes a narrative of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
