Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hillsboro, Indiana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing with locations in every city Nationwide where hair tests can be conducted. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for most tests. These hair tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly favored for drug testing methods. It's becoming a requirement from employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, who prefer it over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are chosen by organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. The main advantage of this method is its extensive detection period of drug use, lasting up to 90 days, collected in an observed collection process, making it nearly impossible to falsify results. However, for detecting use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now recognized as a robust method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair. All other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.) are considered body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the intro processing phase where a sample gets integrated into the lab’s framework. This step ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and reconciles any missing information not included by an electronic custody system.

Screening represents the preliminary assessment for illegal substances. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive findings require verification to hold up in court. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

In cases of a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. This step isolates drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis challenging to conduct.

Positive Screening outcomes are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation as needed. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are notably hard to falsify, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It presents a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair within roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses typically cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal growth patterns can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
