Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screening services in Jonesboro, Indiana. For individuals requiring hair or alcohol drug tests, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched, with facilities across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances based on custom options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug examinations have increasingly been favored for drug testing protocols. This method is now preferred by many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse counselors over traditional urine tests. Employers with stringent drug-free policies, judicial bodies, and probation officers utilize these tests due to their extended detection abilities—up to 90 days. Though urine tests remain the best standard for recent drug use (up to 5 days), hair tests are collected under direct observation, minimizing deceitful practices.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by retaining biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month timeframe of drug and alcohol consumption. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. In discussing head hair, we reference only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key procedures in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing into a laboratory's system. This encompasses ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any other data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be valid in court. Any presumptively positive Screening samples mandate an additional confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this process, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, underscoring why hair drug screening is the most challenging process to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can discover drug use up to 90 days back, contrasting with urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug testing is notably hard to cheat, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Detection through hair occurs approximately 5-7 days post-drug usage.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
