Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessment in Bertrand, Michigan. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is required, Accredited Drug Testing is the specialist, with centers across all cities nationwide ready to carry out hair assessments. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown or body can generally be used. Tests can examine for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing alternatives.

Recently, the drug testing approach has increasingly leaned toward involving a hair follicle drug examination. Now, several employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer a hair drug test over the conventional urine test. It's favored by employers maintaining zero-tolerance policies, court systems, and probationary individuals. The key advantage of a hair follicle drug test lies in its extensive detection window, stretching up to 90 days, collected in an observational process that’s nearly infeasible to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting drug usage within the recent 5-day span, the urine test remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective tool for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in lab processing for a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This process involves ensuring the sample was sealed and mailed correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary fast assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a confirmatory follow-up.

If Screening indicates potential positivity, more hair is drawn from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentration levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), emphasizing why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening result is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, compared to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers longitudinal insight: It can display a drug use pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost factor: Hair tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
