Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Bloomfield Township, Michigan. If you are in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, and we have testing facilities in cities Nationwide qualified to conduct a hair test. You should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head or body hair might be utilized often. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing methods.

In recent times, the approach for drug tests has more frequently embraced hair follicle drug examination. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests instead of conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are employed by companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and people on probation. The chief advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its considerably extended detection period, which is generally up to 90 days, gathered in an observed collection procedure, and is almost impossible to manipulate. Nonetheless, when identifying drug use within the preceding 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a robust method, hair testing efficiently detects drug and alcohol consumption. It captures biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers, offering a prolonged history of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair allows for up to a 90-day detection window for drugs and alcohol. The collection process is straightforward, with limited risk of tampering, and shipping is hassle-free.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair—the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. When conducting EtG, comprehensive panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It's best practice to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (including facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory's processing of a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of initially processing a sample into the lab's system, confirming proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any other necessary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary examination for substance abuse. It's an economical approach for dismissing drug usage in most samples; however, to be court-admissible, a positive outcome requires confirmation. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For those samples testing presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is utilized for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from the hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate method to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredits to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is particularly hard, thereby ensuring precise results.
  • Chronological data: It illustrates a drug use pattern over a period, unlike recent-use only assessments.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate usage: Hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-drug use to reflect drugs.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels found in hair.

Note: Despite being frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the assessment focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
