Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Coleman, Michigan. Whether it's a drug or alcohol test you require, our specialty in hair testing is complemented by numerous centers nationwide, capable of administering hair tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed for most tests. We provide analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various personalized hair testing solutions.

In recent years, the hair follicle drug test has increasingly become a popular method for drug testing. It's now favored by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The main advantage lies in the extended detection period, which can be up to 90 days. Hair tests are collected under supervision, and are almost impossible to tamper with. For drug use within the previous 5 days, however, the urine test remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains an extended record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the developing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the dimension of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair might be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair, whereas body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test outcomes comprises four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a specimen within a lab’s framework. This process verifies that the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid examination for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for ruling out drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging technique to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is executed by GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine testing which offers a narrower detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Altering the results of a hair drug test is extremely tough, increasing result precision.
  • Reveals historical data: It offers insights into patterns of drug use across timeframes, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal discrepancies in hair growth can affect the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
