Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Dexter, Michigan. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analysis and have centers nationwide, including every city, to facilitate hair tests. For effective testing, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body, which can often be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has increasingly been adopted for drug screening. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer a hair drug test over standard urine tests. Hair tests particularly appeal to employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation cases. The main advantage of hair testing is its extensive detection span, up to 90 days, and the collection process, which is monitored and hard to manipulate. Although, for drug detection within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. It offers a historical overview of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, it's less prone to tampering, and it is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise verifying the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. “Head hair” refers solely to scalp hair, whereas “body hair” includes all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

In the lab processing for a drug test result, there are four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed within the lab’s system. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening checks for drug use quickly. It’s an economical method for ruling out drug usage in most cases, but only a confirmed positive screen is valid for legal purposes. Samples that test as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction process. In Extraction, drug traces are isolated from the hair at lower concentrations than what is found in other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any presumptively positive results is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptively positive samples undergo a wash as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a briefer detection period.
  • High integrity: Hair tests are challenging to manipulate, ensuring the reliability of results.
  • Chronological data: It provides a timeline of drug consumption, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs appear in hair samples.
  • Price: Hair testing is typically more costly than alternative testing methods.
  • Variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
