Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Fair Haven, Michigan. For those in need of drug or alcohol assessments through hair, our services are specialized nation-wide. Ensuring proper sample collection, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available, usually from the crown or body. Hair analysis checks for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has gained favor as a method for drug examinations. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts increasingly require them over urine tests. These tests support zero-tolerance policies and probation checks due to their extensive detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation to deter tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strands, hair provides a comprehensive historical record of substance use. When acquired close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional components, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab’s system. This entails confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be permissible in court. Samples presumed to be positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents one of the most challenging methodologies.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before verification as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Verification is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Tampering is challenging: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to higher accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Prevails in Fair Haven, MI lies in its undeniable benefits over urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
