Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Holton, Michigan. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in hair analysis, offering centers across all cities nationwide equipped for this task. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body for the test. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for its added convenience over other methods. Employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse professionals are leaning more towards hair testing rather than the traditional urine tests. With strict no-drug policies, many employers and courts use hair tests, offering a longer detection window up to 90 days and minimizing tampering attempts. Yet, urine tests remain more effective for usage within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing for identifying alcohol and drug usage has gained recognition as an effective method. Hair retains long-term signs of these substances by capturing biomarkers in the fiber of the hair shaft as it grows. When the hair is taken from close to the scalp, it can reveal a history of drug and alcohol use for roughly 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, it's somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to send for analysis.

An ideal sample for assessment and verification is a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil), cut closest to the scalp to obtain 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panel tests exceeding 10, it's preferable to have 150mg. It’s recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, the equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other forms of hair (face, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

In laboratory analysis for drug testing, the principal processes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab system, including ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing information not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a rapid initial evaluation to detect substances. Screening is economically efficient for dismissing drug usage in most samples, however, any positive findings require verification to be legally valid. Samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample tests potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a concentration lower than found in other testing methods such as urine or oral fluid, which makes hair drug tests particularly challenging to execute.

Verification of any positive findings from Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is meticulously evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can determine drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to bypass: Escaping a hair drug test is particularly challenging, ensuring higher accuracy of the results.
  • Shows usage pattern: Provides an overview of drug use over time, rather than only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent use: Drugs are detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other types of testing.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by individual differences such as hair color and growth rate.

Note: Often named “hair follicle tests,” these tests examine the hair strand itself, and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with traditional urine testing in Holton, MI, several advantages emerge. Hair testing is renowned for its superior detection accuracy, which extends over a prolonged period.

  • Longer detection window
  • Reduced risk of cheating

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
