Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Otsego, Michigan. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, operating testing centers nationwide that conduct these tests. Typically, hair length should be 1.5 to 2 inches, and hair from the body may be used when needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence as a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. This method is favored by entities with stringent drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. The key advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, and the secure collection process that is difficult to tamper with, though urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective instrument for detecting substance use. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, providing an extended timeline of alcohol and other drug usage. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal usage up to roughly a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and efficient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will amount to 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise determining the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be harvested. When mentioning head hair, it pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This entails confirming the sample’s seal and proper shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid check for illegal drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug consumption in most cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for admissibility in legal contexts. Samples showing initial positive results in Screening must undergo additional verification.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is pulled from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at a significantly reduced concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is the most complex to execute.

Verification of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with initial positive indications go through washing before verification as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage trends: It depicts a drug usage trend over a time span, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It necessitates about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the testing actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
