Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug tests in Tanner, Alabama. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise is in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide, including every city. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body suffices. Our hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG along with other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored the hair follicle approach. A wide array of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method suits employers with strict anti-drug policies, the court system, and probation individuals. The key advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended drug detection window, lasting up to 90 days, securely collected and hard to tamper with. For recent drug use screening, within the past five days, urine remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a detailed history of alcohol and other substances by trapping biomarkers in the fiber of the growing hair strand. When harvested near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively hard to adulterate, and straightforward to transport.

A sample with a length of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is required. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four major steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory system. This involves validating that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any samples that presumptively test positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is pulled from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical data: It provides a usage pattern over an extended timeline, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Even though they are often named "hair follicle tests," the examination actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
