Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Fair Plain, Michigan. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is what you need, Accredited Drug Testing excels in carrying out hair tests, with centers across all cities nationwide to execute these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific needs.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has increasingly involved using hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are chosen by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and for individuals on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window for drug use, typically covering up to 90 days, collected under observation and challenging to falsify. However, for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. In the context of head hair, we strictly mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a rapid preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening require a further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial material for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a brief detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring results are more accurate.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers numerous advantages over urine testing in Fair Plain, MI. Unlike urine tests, hair analyses detect drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days. This expands the testing window and provides a more comprehensive look at an individual's substance use history, making it highly desirable for employers and institutions requiring stringent assessments.

Compared to urine testing, hair follicle analysis is nearly impervious to cheating. The longer detection window not only expands the historical view of an individual's habits but also bolsters the reliability of the results. This makes it an optimal choice where accuracy is paramount, and challenges common issues facing traditional urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

The chief benefit of hair follicle testing in Fair Plain, MI, lies in its extended detection window. This method reveals drug use for up to 90 days, providing employers a comprehensive insight into an individual's substance history. It's an excellent tool for validating a person's adherence to sobriety over time, offering a wide-ranging view of potential drug or alcohol use.

The prolonged window ensures that employers receive a detailed record of past substance use, allowing them to make insightful decisions regarding personnel. In contrast, other testing methods may fall short by only indicating recent activity, thereby missing vital historical data crucial for thorough evaluations.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Fair Plain, MI, the threat of tampering is significantly reduced with hair follicle tests. This method ensures reliability as the samples are difficult to adulterate compared to other testing types. Hair follicle testing provides reliable and indisputable results, making it a favored choice for employers and legal settings that require unquestionable accuracy and authenticity.

Since hair samples are harvested under supervision, the risk of illicit alteration is minimized. These factors make hair follicle tests a trusted tool when reliability is crucial, whether for employer requirements, court orders, or personal trustworthiness, transcending common traditional testing hurdles.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
