Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Flat Rock, Michigan. For those in need of hair substance or alcohol evaluations, we excel in this service with sites across every city Nationwide ready to conduct a hair assessment. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary. Hair evaluations can detect substances, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for unique testing needs.

Lately, drug screening methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle evaluations. A growing number of workplaces, judicial systems, and addiction specialists demand hair assessments over routine urine analysis. Such tests are favored by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, judiciaries, and those on probation. The chief advantage is the extended substance detection period, typically 90 days, with an observed gathering process, making it nearly failproof. Yet, for recent usage within five days, urine analysis remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective approach for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a detailed historical account of such substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeline of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair only. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary sample integration into a laboratory’s system. This includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and delivered, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary check for drug abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, but a positive result needs to be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation if required. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify substance use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Resilience against tampering: Tampering with a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historic patterns: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual variance in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to detecting substances, hair follicle tests in Flat Rock, MI, clearly surpass urine tests. The superior accuracy and reliability of hair testing mean it can disclose a clearer picture of an individual's drug history. The expansive detection window ensures employers have a comprehensive record of any past drug intake, aiding them in making informed employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Flat Rock, MI provides an almost tamper-proof method of drug detection. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
