Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Melvin, Michigan. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol evaluations, our specialization in hair testing is unmatched, featuring centers in every city across the nation capable of administering a hair test. Typically, samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside other bespoke options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more widely used method for drug assessment. Many organizations, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are moving towards hair drug tests over traditional urine samples. Hair follicle tests benefit those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, such as employers and legal bodies, offering a longer detection window that can span up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, making them highly resistant to falsification. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying instances of drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term recorder of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to about 90 days for both alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both preliminary screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or more extensive panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is preferable. It is advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. When we refer to head hair, this specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties of hair (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary processing of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid check for substance abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be legally admissible. Any presumptively positive samples during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, substances are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the more complex methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is undertaken through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historic usage pattern: It renders a pattern of substance use over time, beyond merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Approximately 5-7 days is required for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Melvin, MI

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests in Melvin, MI, the superiority of hair testing becomes evident. With a lengthy detection period and greater accuracy, hair tests provide insights beyond immediate drug use, typically extending up to 90 days. This enhanced reliability is invaluable, ensuring more detailed substance analysis.

Hair tests are almost impossible to deceive, contrasting with urine tests prone to tampering. This near-foolproof method strengthens the integrity of the testing process, making it a preferred choice for organizations that require certainty and consistency in results.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Melvin, MI

One of the main benefits of hair follicle testing in Melvin, MI, is its extended detection window. It allows a retrospective analysis of up to 90 days, offering employers a broader view of an employee's substance use history. This long-term perspective is critical in maintaining a safe and productive workplace environment.

Employers value the depth of insight hair testing provides, which urine tests cannot match. By covering a comprehensive period, hair tests arm employers with the data required to make informed decisions about hiring and retaining staff.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
