Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug and alcohol testing services throughout Newaygo, Michigan. Specializing in hair testing, we boast nationwide testing centers, ready to conduct your test with professionalism. With at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair required from the scalp or body, our tests can analyze substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more customized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent choice over the years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Benefitting from a significantly extended detection window of up to 90 days, hair tests are conducted under observation, making them difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent drug consumption within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended overview of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair allows for approximately a 3-month window of detection for substances. It is straightforward to collect, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar volume of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in the laboratory for determining drug test results encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning integrates the sample into the lab’s system initially. It involves confirming the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for illicit substances. While Screening can efficiently rule out drug intake for many samples, any positive result requires confirmation to stand in court. Samples preliminarily positive in Screening must undergo secondary verification.

Presumptively positive samples during Screening entail pulling additional hair from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any Screened positive result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary samples are cleansed before confirmation. This entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and accredited by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use over a 90-day period, whereas urine tests detect for shorter durations.
  • Difficulty to falsify: Cheating a hair test is very challenging, making results highly reliable.
  • Shows historical usage: Demonstrates a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs take around 5-7 days to show in hair after use.
  • Expensive: Hair tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the testing analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Newaygo, MI demonstrates clear benefits over traditional urine tests. One of its primary advantages is exceptional detection accuracy. While urine tests can identify recent drug use, hair testing offers a more extended detection window, capturing a broader picture of substance histories.

Furthermore, hair follicle tests are increasingly preferred for their robust reliability. By providing comprehensive insights into drug use behavior, these tests underscore their superiority in detecting long-term abuse patterns, offering more reliable results.

Extended Detection Window

In Newaygo, MI, hair follicle testing provides an expansive detection window that can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior. This extended timeline is crucial for employers seeking a thorough understanding of a candidate or employee's drug use history.

Unlike other testing methods, the ability of hair follicle tests to trace back months ensures that any past substance abuse is noted. Employers gain confidence from having a complete view of an individual's substance use habits, making informed decisions based on this comprehensive analysis.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Newaygo, MI offer a tamper-resistant testing method, minimizing the risk of sample adulteration. This built-in security ensures the integrity of the results, providing accurate and dependable outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
