Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug assessments in Salem, Michigan. If a hair drug or alcohol examination is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair assessments, with facilities in all cities nationwide offering hair testing services. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body can be used. Hair analysis includes drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle drug assessments has grown in drug testing practices. Numerous employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse specialists favor a hair test over a typical urine analysis. Hair follicle drug screenings are selected by companies enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and individuals on probation. The key advantage is the extended detection window, often up to 90 days, secured via an observed process and considerably tamper-proof. For recent usage detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended overview of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair’s growing fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can extend up to roughly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat tough to tamper with, and simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, a similar amount of body hair can be taken. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process for analyzing a lab drug test involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system. It involves validating that the sample was properly sealed and mailed, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug misuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen needs verification for admissibility in court. Any samples preliminarily marked positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows a preliminary positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is withdrawn from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging method to undertake.

Any positive result from Screening is verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The end-to-end laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage history: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug testing in Salem, MI, hair follicle screenings offer numerous advantages over traditional urine tests. Their superior detection accuracy places them ahead, as they can discern drug use that spans weeks, providing more comprehensive data.

The reliability of hair testing makes it the method of choice for scenarios requiring stringent drug policies. The conclusive evidence that hair tests provide minimizes uncertainties, making it a compelling alternative to the urine test.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Salem, MI, extends its advantages through its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days. This lengthy detection window grants employers a thorough understanding of an individual’s substance history.

This prolonged observation period means that hair follicle tests can reveal drug use patterns that urine tests might miss, thus aiding employers in Salem, MI in making informed hiring decisions based on comprehensive substance histories.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle test method significantly reduces the chance of sample tampering, ensuring reliability in Salem, MI. Compared to urine tests, where adulteration is a common concern, hair tests are secured from such vulnerabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
