Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Waltz, Michigan. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in this method with testing centers available in cities across the country capable of performing the test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has increasingly featured hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests over typical urine tests. These tests are relied upon by employers with strict drug use policies, the legal system, and those on probation. The advantage of hair testing is its longer detection window—up to 90 days—ensuring a more reliable collection process that's hard to deceive. However, urine tests remain superior for identifying recent drug use within a 5-day span.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have come to be regarded as an influential method for the detection of drug and alcohol involvement. Hair strands provide an extended history of substance consummation by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands. When obtained near to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a three-month detection timeframe for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and easy to dispatch.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield about 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and confirming. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s framework. This involves verifying proper sample sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not provided by the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective means to eliminate drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening do require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Historical usage insights: It can establish a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Waltz, MI, hair follicle testing outshines urine tests through extended detection and reliable accuracy. While traditional urine tests check recent drug use, hair tests offer a broader look, covering up to 90 days of history.

Employers and legal entities in Waltz increasingly prefer hair tests because of their tamper-proof nature and longer detection periods, providing an unbeatable edge over typical urine testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

One significant advantage of hair follicle testing in Waltz, MI, is its extended detection period. Unlike urine tests, hair testing reveals substance use over up to 90 days, providing a thorough view of an individual's history.

This longer window of detection allows employers and law enforcement to gain insights into an applicant's or employee's lifestyle choices, ensuring more informed decisions based on comprehensive data.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Waltz, MI, offer an incredibly tamper-resistant method for drug testing. Due to the nature of the test, sample adulteration is virtually impossible, ensuring trustworthiness.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
