Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Willow Run, Michigan. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, we are experts in hair testing with locations nationwide, ready to conduct your test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to your needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for substance detection. Employers, judicial systems, and professionals in substance abuse recovery now prefer hair drug tests over typical urine tests. It is favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers due to its ability to detect drug use over an extended period of up to 90 days and its observed collection process, which minimizes cheating. Nevertheless, for detection within five days, urine testing remains unsurpassed.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for detecting substance use. Hair records a prolonged history of drug and alcohol consumption by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When sampled close to the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection span for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair segment consisting of around 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test analysis comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a specimen into the lab’s framework. This step involves ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any unresolved data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most specimens, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for court validity. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening inevitably require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Verification of any positive results from Screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples presumed positive are pre-cleaned before confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection timespan.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It offers a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to track recent consumption: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
